7 Tricks To Making The Best Pregnancy Protein Smoothies

Protein smoothies are such a great option for pregnancy.

The reason is because, its never been more important to eat healthy than during pregnancy because now it affects the baby and also the pregnancy.

But it’s also ohhhh soooo hard to eat healthy during pregnancy, isn’t it?

Between the nausea, the morning sickness, the food aversions (especially protein), and the lack of energy to actually cook and eat, its almost impossible to eat healthy.

Am I right, or am I right? LOL

I know that I couldn’t eat a piece of spinach or broccoli or any green for that matter.

I also had a good 6 week run that I could not even look at a piece of chicken, turkey, steak or fish, without vomiting in my mouth lol excuse the details.

I felt so bad.

I had no energy.

I was hungry all the time.

And I had terrible guilt that I wasn’t feeding my baby the right and best nutrients.

Food is NUTRIENTS.

The pregnancy and baby need nutrients.

For example, protein helps the growth and development of the baby’s tissues and organs. It also helps move blood supply from mom to fetus.

NUTRITION IS EVERYTHING DURING PREGNANCY.

Ok, not that I got that off my chest, let me give you some tips on how to make the perfect, most delicious protein smoothies for pregnancy.

First of all let me give you a list of ingredients you can have on hand to make delicous and perfect smoothies for pregnancy.

Spinach

Kale

Avocado (fresh or frozen)

Fresh or Frozen Fruit: blueberries, strawberries, raspberries, bananas, pineapple, peach, dragon fruit.

Nut butters: almond, peanut, cashew, sunbutter, hazelnut

Seeds: chia, flax, brewers yeast

Misc: Greek yogurt, cocoa powder, cacao powder, peanut or almond powder, cinnamon, pumpkin pie spice, ginger, applesauce, pumpkin puree, vanilla extract

Order Matters

I use a single serve blender. I love the Oster blender, I got it on amazon for like $20, Ill show you a picture below.

I like to first add the liquid and then I add the protein powder. This is a pro tip here… Then I close the lid and shake it up. Once the protein is blended (just a few shakes), I add the greens (if adding those), then I add the nut butters or spices and at the end I add the fruit. You will get a perfect consistency.

Sneak Veggies In

The amazing thing about smoothies is that if you blend spinach or kale into them, you will NOT taste it. If you can get past the green, you can enjoy added nutrients that are so important and are probably not getting enough of. I do this for smoothies with my kids and husband as well because they don’t love greens. But I’ve gotten them in the habit of the green smoothies and since they love the taste, the can get passed the green.

Frozen Is Better

I said before to use fresh or frozen fruit. But really, for the perfect consistency, you wan to try to use frozen fruit. Luckily, most grocery stores, including Walmart and Costco have even Organic frozen fruits and at a very very good price.

Hack: Frozen bananas in smoothies are everything. When I get bananas, I usually get extra and I wait until they ripen and then I cut them in 1/4 or 1/3 and freeze them in a Ziplock bag. Helps so much with smoothies. I make yummy healthy ice cream with them too.

Balance

While it can be exciting to pile on a ton of fruit in your blender, its important to add a variety of different nutrients with different nutrient profiles. Though fruits are incredibly good for you, they are also super duper high in sugar. For your liquid, I would try to stick to non-dairy milks like oat milk, unsweetened no flavor almond milk, coconut milk, etc.

I would absolutely not use juices or ice cream as a base.

Flavor & Texture It Up

You can add creaminess by adding avocado and Greek yogurt or even pumpkin puree.

You can also add more flavor using spices like cinnamon, nutmeg, ginger, pumpkin pie spice or cocoa powder.

Get creative and have fun with it.

Don’t Give Up

I say this because you may not get every smoothie right.

Some may actually taste disgusting… its happened to me. It actually even happens when I try new dinner recipes and the whole family hates it.

But I don’t give up.

I keep trying and trying.

Keep trying until you find several recipes that can become staples.
