5 Tips To Prevent Stretch Marks During Pregnancy

It’s one of those things that seem to go hand in hand with pregnancy, right?

We all think about it and we all hope we don’t get them.

And while there totally are times that you do ALL THE THINGS right, and still get them because…. genetics 🙁 there are some things you can do to lessen the chances of you getting them.

So, I have a high chance of getting them as my mom and aunts all got them.

To say the least, I was scared.

Luckily… well, because I put in the work, I had 2 pregnancies and no stretch marks.

So today I want to share with you 5 tips so you can do everything you can to prevent them.

And listen, if you already have them from prior pregnancies, I know that it’s nothing to be ashamed of.

So many moms have the right mind set and have learned to embrace them as the effect from a beautiful blessing.

But know, that this is a fresh start and we can do everything we can on THIS pregnancy to lower the chances of getting any more.

Why Do We Get Stretch Marks

During pregnancy our skin is forced to stretch fast and beyond what it’s used to. This causes trauma to the skin, causing scars. The collagen and fibers in the skin tear as the skin stretches, which is what leaves the marks.

Hormones are also to blame for stretch marks during pregnancy. Fibroblasts are not as strong as usual, which makes it hard for the skin to stretch. Also, collagen levels are lower during pregnancy, which make skin less elastic and easier to stretch rapidly, leaving marks.

Good news, there’s things we can do about all of this.

5 Tips To Prevent Stretch Marks

1. Eat More Protein

Our skin loves protein.

Aside from being a MACRO NUTRIENT and the one most important for our babies development in-utero, killing insatiable hunger and crushing cravings…

Protein is amazing for skin, hair and nails.

Consuming more protein will strengthen your skin as well as give it the collagen it needs to handle the rapid stretching.

2. Increase Collagen Intake

While protein does have collagen and supplementing with a protein powder daily, like mPower is great….

You most likely don’t get enough protein in your diet in order to get enough collagen.

3. Control Weight Gain

Rapid and excess weight gain is going to cause your skin to stretch faster which will cause the marks because your body isn’t used to that kind of stretching and at that rate.

If you gain less excess weight, your skin won’t have to stretch as much making your chances of them, much less.

So make sure you are exercising 3-4 times a week.

I always talk about how resistance based workouts are so good for you, they build muscle which is metabolically active tissue, which helps you burn more fat and also gives you muscle tone.

Exercise is also good for circulation and getting a lot of blood flow to the skin which is also good.

If you are making healthy food choices, not eating for 2, not giving in to sugar cravings and you are moderately exercising, you should not gain excess weight.

Making your chances of a stretch mark free pregnancy, much higher 🙂

4. Hydrate and Moisturize

When your skin is dry, it cannot stretch easily.

Remember, we want to make it as seamless as possible for your skin to stretch.

If we can make it a slow process and an easy process, you will not get stretch marks.

So drinking A LOT OF WATER is crucial.

Buy yourself a new cute cup that holds at least 20 ounces of water and make sure you drink half your body weight in pounds, in ounces of water plus another 20-30% if you are exercising.

This should be a priority EVERY.SINGLE.DAY.

Water Consumption Hack

Set a goal of ounces, write it down on a post it and put it several places and make sure you get those ounces in. This is huge!

Keeping the skin moisturized will also help in how the skin stretches.

I love using Organic Coconut oil or any natural based creams with no parabans or chemicals in them.

Make sure to read the ingredients.

I used to use coconut oil twice a day. Everywhere…my boobs, belly, hips, butt, thighs.

5. Take Fish Oil & Vitamin C

Omega-3s supports ligament healing, reduces inflammation and enhances collagen production.

Foods High in Omega-3

Fish: Mackerel, Sardines, Oysters, Herring, Salmon

Seeds: Flax, Chia & Walnuts
